Glauber Rocha's
speech at the end of The Age of the Earth.
"So, civilization is too small. Before Christ and after
Christ. A tecnological development in Europe, economics; the mercantilism, capitalism,
neocapitalism, socialism, the transcapitalism, trans-socialism, the anarco-constructivism,
a whole despair of a humanity in search of a perfect society, the utopias, the
march... Religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants cause explosions,
navigations, wars, Moorish invasions in Europe, Christian invasions in North Africa.
Spain, Portugal and England ocupy America on the other side. Massacred natives,
imported blacks, independency wars, latifundium and industry, wars between latifundium
and industry, wars between industry and latifundium, civil wars, rebellions, wars,
guerrillas, revolutions, coups d'état, democracies, regressions, advances, failures,
sacrifices, martyrdom, America. North America develops. The American technological
development takes civilization to the world of the 20th century. The Sovietic
Revolution, the sovietic revolution, the sovietic re-volution of 1917 leaded by
Lenin, Trotski and Stalin undermines completely the North-American capitalist
discourse. Meanwhile, the underdeveloped peoples of Latin America, Africa and
Asia pay the price of the technological development of Europe, of the United States,
of the capilalist Europe, of the socialist Europe, of the Catholic Europe, of
the Protestant Europe, of the atheistic Europe, of the United States.
The underdeveloped peoples are on the base of the pyramid.
They can do nothing. All search for peace. All should search for peace. There
will be a dialetical synthesis between both capitalism and communism, I am sure
about this. And the Third World. This would be the birthing of the new, true
democracy. Democracy isn't socialist, it isn't communist, it isn't capitalist.
Democracy is adjectiveless. Democracy is the reigning of the people. De-mo-cra-cy,
democracy is the unreigning of the people.
We all know that we are going to die of hunger in the
third worlds, we all know of the poor children, the abandoned old people, the
starving mad people, so much misery, so much ugliness, so much disgrace, we
all know this. It is necessary a revolution of an economical, social, technological,
cultural, spiritual, sexual order so that the people can really live the pleasure.
Brazil is a great country. Latin America. Africa. You cannot think in terms
of one only country. We have to multinationalize, internationalize the world
in a great interdemocratic regime, with the great contribution of Christianity
and of other religions, all religions. Christianity and all the religions are
the same religion. Among the understanding of the religious people and the politicians
converted to love... "
